Creative Process Statement

Creative Process Statement

My creative expression is necessary, like breathing; my desire to create persists.  Art and design are intertwined in my process. The creative entanglement began when I sold my first painting, bought a sewing machine, made a bag, and called it a Marnie Bug. Through this experience, the canvas for my stories expanded with the addition of functional art in accessories. I have a passion for production and branding. I am influenced by Warhol, Matisse, Van Gogh, Coco Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Ralph Lauren. My sources of inspiration are art, nature, and history. I am fascinated by having an idea, bringing it to life, and providing 'happiness' one accessory at a time.

My work is driven by a continuous desire to learn and improve. I use a variety of creative expressions to tell a story that is continually unfolding, a narrative that reflects my journey as a work in progress. Whether working with acrylics, pastels, and oils on canvas, paper, or leather, each piece is an extension of this personal narrative.

I keep a notebook and a journal to record my aspirations, dreams, and spontaneous ideas. This practice is crucial in transforming these thoughts into the functional and expressive art I create, especially in my work with leather and other materials.

I return to my art as an energy source to create the accessories. The accessories are about producing functional art that strives for timeless quality and conservation of materials in reimagined ways. For example, I incorporated the voting booth panels I found in a warehouse in Northern California into a line of duffle bags in various sizes. Or the left-over leather scraps I used to create a banana slug leather collage on the outside of a zipper pouch.

Above all, I believe a good design is efficient, and that is art. My artistic philosophy is rooted in the belief that every piece is a step in a journey. As I continue exploring and expanding my horizons, I strive to create art and accessories that resonate with others while connecting the dots in my story.
